Barbara Ann Reflection

Barbara Ann Project Prompt #3 (Five months from last prompt…) Barbara Ann is now back in her home town of Parsons, TN. The homeless men who nursed her back to health also bought her a bus ticket to go back to her family. However, instead of the warm welcome that Barbara Ann had hoped for, she was not welcomed at home because of the nature of her pregnancy. Her father tried for months to find the man who raped Barbara Ann, and because he has not been successful in finding him, he spends much of his day sitting in his rocking chair staring at apparently nothing. Barbara Ann’s mother loves her daughter but does not wish to bring a bad name on her family by taking her to church, or even to the grocery store. This environment has caused Barbara Ann to become clinically depressed, and she has begun to refuse to eat. She also has trouble sleeping and frequently has troubling dreams and memories related to the trauma she endured. At Barbara Ann’s prenatal visit, the obstetrician admitted Barbara Ann to the hospital to insert a feeding tube. The rumors of the nature of Barbara Ann’s pregnancy were rampant at the hospital, and those rumors resulted in less than optimal care for her. Sponge baths were not given, and her food tray was always the last to be delivered. Worse than that, nurses talked openly about Barbara Ann because they thought she was “out of it” and unable to hear them. It just so happened that the obstetrician happened to hear the nurses belittle Barbara Ann, and he has called you, the social worker on duty, to intervene on behalf of Barbara Ann and her family. – Discuss any assumptions and biases that may have been at work in you in previous prompts, and what you have learned about meeting the clients where they are and leave your biases at the door. – If you were her social worker, how would you intervene on her behalf? *Your grade will be assessed based on the depth of your response & reflection, and careful attention to matters of punctuation and grammar in your writing. Write 2 pages (do not count the cover page in page number).
