Christian Ethics

Ethics after reading your classmates’ threads, choose one to which you will respond, then write a reply that interacts with your classmate’s thread and presents a well-reasoned alternative to his or her approach to the issue. You do not have to defend a position that is diametrically opposed to your classmate’s position, but you do need to either defend a position that is significantly different than his/hers or defend the same position in a very different way. If possible, you must reply to a classmate to whom no one else has yet replied. Treat your classmate’s opinion with sensitivity and respect. This is a university-level writing assignment. Therefore it must be carefully proofread, free of grammar, spelling, and punctuation errors. Do not use slang, emoticons, or abbreviations (as if you are texting or sending an email to a friend). Your reply must be 500–600 words. You will be penalized for falling short or exceeding the word count. Any quotes or information used from sources other than yourself (including your classmate’s thread) must be cited using footnotes in the current Turabian format and will not count towards the total word count. Needs 3 sources Reply to: “I want to begin this discussion by briefly going over a quick definition of relativism and absolutism. Being relativistic is basically saying that because of someone’s background or their culture, the way that they perceive things can be different from yours. Depending on a specific topic, they can use those things that they’ve been through in life as a way to define their viewpoint and cause it to be different from the one you have. In the mindset of an absolutist, everyone is on the same page. If something is stated, the meaning of that is known to all and there’s no second-guessing what that may mean. To answer the question on which area Christian ethics falls under, I would have to say that relativism is more aligned with the world. When we think of the Bible and God’s word, a lot of it is very cut and dry. The stories have meanings and they’re easy to follow. That’s why you’d think Christian ethics should be absolutist. The problem with that is everyone doesn’t read things the same way. The way that we interpret scripture can be different and can give us a different outlook on how we should live our lives. Another issue that you run into is that many of us pick and choose which parts of the Bible that we want to believe or input into our daily lives. We tend to get stuck on the things that we feel really passionate about and start to discard what we deem is less important, and that’s not always the best approach. One article that I found lays it out well in saying that “Relativism asserts that there is no consistency of moral beliefs because moral principles are relative to individual persons and, consequently, there are no absolute or universal moral standards.” (McDonald, 2010) When looking at the differences between ethical relativism and the subjective elements, I think a good way to describe it would be that ethical relativism comes down to how one feels based on how they were raised and taught. Whereas subjective relativism is based on none of those things, just how an individual thinks. If I am taught my whole life that going to a church is the best way that I can truly worship the Lord, that falls into ethical or cultural relativism. But if I get older and decide to go against that and realize that I can have a closer relationship to the Lord by worshiping him by myself in my home, that is more of a subjective approach. The Bible tells us that “There is a way that appears to be right, but in the end, it leads to death.” (Proverbs 14:12, NIV) I like this verse because it lays it out clearly that the Bible has a meaning. Just because we want to twist its words so that it can make us feel better about the things we do, that there will still be consequences for those actions.”
