Imagine this: You’ve been in traffic all day running errands and dinner time is near. You refuse to go home to deal with an unkempt kitchen nor have you taken anything down to be cooked. So, what is your next move? B. It’s convenient these days to get take-out or dine-in, but where do you go? According to the article in CQ Research, over 45 million Americans utilize roughly 170,000 various fast-food restaurants every day. C. The fast-food industry has mastered the needs/wants of its customers and I would like to discuss the influences of the customers choice. With my own personal experiences and observation, I have determined three major contributions to the success of the fast-food industry. These include the bargain, speed of service, and convenience. With these sounding like a good thing, one thing to take into account is the quality of the product which isn’t emphasized enough. II. BODY A. The Bargain 1. Anyone loves a good bargain, but how does it affect the business itself? According to the magazine, Advertising Age, two years after introducing their Value Menu, with Taco Bell’s profit increasing by 50% (Hume & Johnson). Other restaurants followed suit, but some experienced a decrease in profit margin. Today, restaurants have value menus in every aspect of the fast-food industry.• McDonald’s has a wide variety of products on their Value Menu for Breakfast, Lunch, and Dinner• Burger King has several items for cheap or bundle deals. B. Speed of Service 1. Marketers has figured out that speed of service has contributed to the success of the fast-food industry. An article published in Forbes emphasize on how customers want speed of service and they are willing to look over the quality of their purchases. (Harris 32) 2. Campaigns have been established to support improving fast food services. Burger King has incorporated dinner table services. At Denny’s, you can get a free meal if your meal isn’t delivered in a timely manner. Taco Bell’s goal is to get you out of the Drive-Thru within 90 seconds from the time you order to receiving your food at the pick-up window. C. It’s the Convenience for Customers 1. Even with the success deriving on quality and speed of service, convenience does come into play. There are more fast-food restaurants now more than ever. Restaurants are being built in high trafficking areas and low-income communities. D. Quality Not So Quality 1. The average fast-food consumer doesn’t pay attention to the quality of their products. Incidents with E Coli food poisoning have had an impact on how restaurants promote food handling and safety. All restaurants are graded by the Department of Health with an A being good and anything less than is of concern which can lead too a fine up to being shut down. III. CONCLUSION A. It appears that bargain, speed of service, and convenience are major factors that contributes to the success of fast-food restaurants. B. So, the next time you’re considering fast food because it’s easy, think about what you’re really considering in regard to your health.
