Assessment Task #2 What sort of “problem” is the problem pitch about? The problem pitch is about identifying a problem that a customer has, where you think there might be an opportunity to improve that customer experience. As you prepare for this assignment, it will be helpful to review the material in Module 2: Opportunities. The problems that we want to focus on here are situations where a customer has a job they’re trying to do (or a task they’re trying to complete) and where existing products and services don’t seem to be meeting this need well. One way to think about this assignment is: “If you had 5 minutes to convince your group for assignment 3/4 that the problem you’ve identified is the one that you should all focus on as a team for the rest of the semester, what would you say to persuade them?”. Here are a few things that this assignment *is not* about: It’s not about problems with existing products and how a company fixed them (ie. fixing a problem with a certain model of car, adding a better camera to a smartphone, or fixing a bug in some software). It’s not about huge global problems (like pandemics, global warming, or world hunger). It’s not about proposing solutions to the problem you’ve identified. You should be articulating why it’s a problem worth solving, not suggesting potential solutions. Should I propose solutions to the problem I’ve identified? This assignment is just about the problem, not about solutions. If you do spend time talking about potential solutions, that time will be wasted for the purposes of how the assignment is graded. Remember the popular saying in startup communities “great entrepreneurs fall in love with a problem, not their proposed solution”.
