Evidence-Based Practice for Special Topics The focus of your research must be on adolescents. Eating Disorders You will research the empirical and clinical literature on this issue/topic and, from the information you gather, provide a detailed overview of this issue/topic. Again, the focus of your assignment (and research/information gathered) should be on children or adolescents, not adults. The purpose of this assignment is for you to learn what current research/literature tells us about your topic, including what the best practices are to addressing this issue in counseling/clinical practice. The articles, papers, or chapters you read should inform you about the issue in general, as well as what the evidence-based practices are for addressing this issue in practice (e.g., assessment and/or treatment). You are expected to use peer-reviewed journal articles and academic books/book chapters for your research. Internet webpages or information sites connected to specific organizations are not sufficient for this assignment. Although these sites may point you in the right direction in terms of relevant information and important research, they cannot be the basis of your assignment and relied upon as sources of information. Grading will be impacted if these are your sources of information. Assignment Details: Prepare a PowerPoint slides presentation that addresses the following for your topic area. You should have 5-9 slides for each of the topics, as well as 1-2 final slides (plus references slides) that tie it all together as explained below. Be sure to cite your sources within your slides, as well as at the end, in references. Although the appearance and creativity of the slides are important, it is the content in the slides that is critical. Remember, this is a presentation and should look as such. Content is critical, but it should be provided as appropriate for a presentation (typically in clear and concise bullets, not overly-wordy paragraphs) and should not look like a paper that’s been cut and pasted into a presentation. Your grading is focused on the content you provide; thus, although it should look professional and interesting, the content is more important than having creative and “catchy” slides that have little content. The key here is to gather a lot of information, learn about your topic, and then consider how to organize it in a meaningful way that could be presented and demonstrates your understanding. If the presentation does not look cohesive and parts are simply “chunked together”, marks will be deducted. Part 1: For the topic area, prepare slides that address each of the following (you should have 5-9 slides per topic area): The “State of the Art” in Clinical Approaches – i.e., the Evidence-Based Best Practices: What does research tell us about the most evidence-based, clinical approaches to the treatment of this issue? Is there any documented agreement and literature on best-practices regarding addressing this issue? That is, do researchers/clinicians/experts in the field generally agree on certain assessment/counseling/intervention approaches over others due to evidence supporting these approaches? If so, what are these approaches, what is involved, and how useful do they seem? If divergent views/disagreements exist about clinical/treatment approaches, what are these views/different treatments and what does the literature say about why there is the little consensus? Is there more strength or validity to one view, approach, etc. based on what you find in the literature? If so, why? If there don’t seem to be any recommended, empirically-based “best practices”, why is that? This section is about understanding and explaining what our current knowledge is about what we’re “supposed to do” in addressing this issue. In order to achieve this, you will need to consult multiple sources for each issue. Remember, comments made in one study or by one source would not be sufficient evidence to state that something is a “best” practice, or to state that there isn’t one. To complete this section well, you will need to demonstrate that you have consulted and integrated many sources to come up with your conclusions. (2-4 slides)
