RESEARCH PROPOSAL PAPER STRUCTURE FINAL PAPER DUE SATURDAY DECEMBER 12, 2020 BY 11:59 PM VIA BLACKBOARD The final assignment (8-10 pages) requires you to think of a new social science study in an international context and explain how you would conduct the research. You will use work and feedback from prior assignments to complete this proposal. Please ensure that you have a running head and page number on EACH page. Think of this as a “sales pitch” – research proposals are done routinely to get funding (from government, not for profits, universities) and you must “sell” your idea for funding and permission to proceed. This paper is 100% HYPOTHETICAL. NO ONE should actually be conducting any field research or data collection outside the scope of the instructions below. It is in your BEST interest to review the tab on Blackboard “Research Proposal Instructions and Submission” early on in the semester to plan ahead. The required outline is below. Page requirements below are mandatory. Do NOT exceed page requirements in any part. Cover Page (1 page) Abstract (1 page) 100-150 words a list of 3-5 keywords is mandatory Introduction (½ – 1 page) – all relevant concepts must be defined here very concretely. The reader should have absolutely no doubt what you mean by terms like “FGM” or “police brutality.” Literature Review (3-4 pages) – this is where you present a summary and synthesis of existing research on the topic. Then you demonstrate how *your* research will be different (different countries, different timeframe, different theory, different approach). Basically, the reader wants to know why here they should continue reading the next few pages – if you are going to simply repeat what others have done, why bother? Subsection 1 (the number of subsections will depend on your topic) Subsection 2 Subsection 3 Theory (½- 1 page) – this is the criminological or sociological theory you will be used to help guide your research. Good tips for this are from the articles you have summarized in your literature review. Methods (4-5 pages) Research Design Question Hypothesis: remember this is *not* your opinion or a conclusion but a quasi-experimental setup to test effects. Data Collection Data Management Data Analysis Ethical Considerations (½ – 1 page): this can be overall ethical issues with your topic (such as studying crime victims or incarcerated persons) as well as any potential bias issues (such as power dynamics you may encounter). If you are doing human subjects research you *must* include the IRB requirements and information from the CITI certification. Measurement Issues and Limitations (½ – 1 page) Conclusion (½ – 1 page) – your conclusion should be your final “sales pitch” including your qualifications (education and work experience) as well as the impact this research will have on law enforcement, government, victim services, etc. APA formatting Extra Credit (Appendix 1-2 pages) You may include a consent form and/or survey questions for 1 additional point towards your final paper. Consent forms must be filled out with the relevant parts, correctly and logically. Survey questions, 10 max., that are logically a style of questions we covered in class, appropriate to your study. Important components you will need to cover include the following Explain the prior research on your topic, and how your project intends to fill a gap left by this prior research, in your literature review. Explain your methods of research inquiry clearly and fully; think of this as a recipe or instruction manual where you will break down for the reader *step by step* your methodology and steps. Include sections on or reference to hypotheses, research questions, validity, sampling, variables, ethics, units of analysis, operationalization, and specifics on your type of method selected: e.g. control/experimental groups (if applicable), or survey items (if applicable). You must have at least 10 references. You may only use academic sources to reach this quota – books, journal articles, and organizational websites. You may NEVER cite Wikipedia or any other non-official website. You may use newspapers and media content, but only AFTER your academic source quota has been met. You must cite every source within the text of the paper and include every source on your reference page. Spelling, grammar, and writing style DO count. 5% of the grade will be reduced for each day the paper is late.
