Interview of Administrator

Candidates will interview an administrator or test coordinator about the Mississippi Academic Assessment Program. Each Candidate’s interview should consist of ten questions relating to the requirements of state testing, student achievement, and data analysis. Candidates should include the contact information of the interviewee and the signature of the interviewee. Candidate should include a one-page student reflection summary. I already interviewed the person I just need a one-page reflection summary based on her answers. 1. Please share with me an example of how you helped coach or mentor someone. What improvements did you see in the person’s knowledge or skills? I helped to mentor a teacher looking to go into administration. I made her a part of my leadership team. She would sit in on Tier meetings and learn how to respond to parents in stressful situations. I saw vast improvements in her ability to keep her composure and to think rationally. 2. Share an experience in which your conference with a parent or staff improved educational activities, policies, student behavior, or student learning problems. I had to develop a plan with the parent, general education, and special education teacher concerning a student diagnosed with ODD, Autism, and was bullying others. By working as a team we collectively developed strategies that proved to be successful for the child in any setting. His discipline referrals were cut by 75% over the next month. 3. Share an experience in which you successfully shared a difficult piece of information. I once had to explain to a parent why their child was going to be retained in the third grade. She became irate and hung up the phone in my face. However, about fifteen minutes later, she called back and apologized. She also understood why he was being retained and that it was the best decision considering the circumstances. 4. Describe an experience in which you identified the educational needs of your students and successfully developed a way to teach/train them. I was able to assess that there were gaps in our curriculum that was needed to reach our students in Tier III. I analyzed the data and it showed that there were disparities in the foundational skills that students did not have. Therefore, I suggested that we implement supplemental curriculum materials. With these materials, in two years we were able to move 16 points closer to an “A”! 5. How do you establish and maintains standards of appropriate student behavior and discipline to achieve a functional learning atmosphere in the classroom and assists in its maintenance campus-wide? My team and I have developed a PBIS system to address student behavior and discipline. I inspect this monthly through walkthroughs and observations of the teachers. The leadership team and I meet to discuss our findings. Finally, we share and discuss the data quarterly with the staff in order to give them ownership of what is happening in their room as it relates to classroom management. 6. What do you use to monitors teachers in the evaluation of the learning progress of students on a regular basis using appropriate assessments? I use the Mississippi Professional Growth Rubric Model, annual MS MAAP data, and data from the following curriculum sources: iREADY, Renaissance, and STAR. 7. How do you disaggregate data and works with the school’s administration and faculty in understanding assessment data in order to generate effective responses to the school/students’ needs and to drive instruction? We take the data from the previous testing year to see how the third and fourth graders did. We then formulate a chart to see where they need to be in order to maintain or improve our school’s rating. After each benchmark, we have schoolwide data meetings with each grade level. We look at each student to see what their performance level is as it relates to them being on target for academic success at the end of the year. 8. What type of training do you provide to school staff in using formative assessments to enhance and engage student learning as well as facilitate the administration of state-mandated assessments? We provide training to all staff by the individuals our curriculum is purchased through. We have this training at the beginning and middle of the year as a follow-up. 9. What kind of staff development activities are used to focus on the use of data and assessment to enhance learning and collaborative instructional planning? We have weekly professional learning community (PLC’s) and faculty meetings every other week. Teachers are also required to keep a data binder and updated binder sheets on each student in their classroom. It is a required piece for the teacher evaluation process. 10. How do you guarantee all stakeholders buy into the plan developed? There is never a guarantee that all stakeholders will buy-in. However, to get a better supportive response, I always survey and include my staff in processes or decisions that will affect them. I don’t just listen but, I show that I value their input. Building relationships is key to the entire process.
