Issues and Controversies

Please Read Thoroughly There are two other databases that may help:  Issues and Controversies and Opposing Viewpoints in Context.  For the essay, you will pick a controversial, debatable, and/or ethical issue (see below), research both sides of it, and in an essay explain which side presents the stronger argument.  This is NOT a traditional persuasive essay; rather it is an essay that explains the process of research and how you (the researcher) have evaluated the evidence that you found.  Yes, you will use “I” in this paper.  You will prove which side of the issue makes more sense to you and why you came to this conclusion.   1. The first thing you should do is pick a researchable topic.  Below are some examples, but there are others. * gun control, the death penalty, euthanasia, legalization of marijuana, uniforms in public schools, sex ed in school, immigration laws, animal testing, lowering the drinking age to 18, payment for college athletes 2.  Next, you should narrow down your topic to two areas of research.  For each area, you will research both sides–one for, and the other against.  You will support each side of each area of research with information from at least ONE of your articles; you are required to use at least four articles for this essay and annotated works cited.  You may have one article for each side of each area (2 sides, 2 areas = four articles), or you may find that an article presents both sides.  When you go to the Opposing Viewpoints website, for example, you will see that each article presents what supporters say and what opponents say; you can use that article in multiple paragraphs in your essay; however, it still counts only as ONE article.  You need four articles (i.e. sources).  * So, for example, if you are researching the death penalty, one area of research could be deterrence; you would find at least one article that argues that the death penalty does deter future crimes and at least one that explains how it has no impact.  You would need to do this for the second area as well.  After you find your four sources–see the overview and directions for what you need to find–, you are to annotate each one.  List each source (in alphabetical order) in the MLA format, and under each source, in 100-150 words each, summarize it and explain for what side of what area of research you will use it. Follow the  MLA format (heading and center the assignment).   See the link below or look up the MLA Annotated Works Cited page for the format.
