Personal Insight

Directions: This is for a college application and should be no more than 550 words. This basically my last opportunity to sell me to the university. Below, I’ve included some talking points I would like you to incorporate. Please answer the question below with those points. Thank you If there’s anything else you want us to know about you, now’s your chance. But remember, you should use this space only if you want to describe anything that you have not had the opportunity to include elsewhere in the application. This shouldn’t be an essay, but rather a place to explain unusual personal or family circumstances or anything that may be unclear in other parts of the application. In youth, I had a Great Uncle and Aunt who I would frequently visit. At the time they were well into their 70’s and had lived in the Jim Crow south and had endured racial discrimination firsthand. They had a lifetime of stories and unlike most kids my age, I was extremely interested and wanted to know more. I was the only kid that I knew in the same age that would annually Roots and Shaka Zulu in its entirety. At the time I didn’t know it, but as an adult, I came to realize that knowledge of the African American experience was my passion. As a teenager I would frequently read books such as “the Mis-Education of the Negro” by Carter G. Woodson, “Black Power” by Kwame Ture, or “They Came Before Columbus” By Ivan Van Sertima. Even though my education started out a little slow, I now have momentum and I want to continue my education at one of the two most prestigious schools in the United States Cal or U.C. Davis. I have worked extremely hard at Contra Costa College to maintain above a 3.3 GPA and I will continue to maintain an even higher standard of work at my next institution.
