Small Group Assignment

First, be sure that you have reviewed the Group Tasks in the Collaborate in Small Groups tab. The work you have completed here in the discussion board will be graded toward your completion of the presentation this week. Your work and ideas need to be written and published in the Small Group discussion board in response to the tasks assigned. Topic Selection: For the Small Group Assignment next week, you will as a group choose an episodic podcast from the popular podcast, Criminal to listen. The podcasts are short and only summarize and prepare a commentary for the crimes. You will need to present your theory of the argument for innocence or guilt based on your listening of the podcast and your own additional research. You may be able to research the claims or evidence by looking into potential hypotheses more or locate another documentary or episode of the trial online or through streaming. You can search your own ideas or rely on those presented. https://thisiscriminal.com/ Subject/ Research Areas: • Literature (Review of research/ documentation of case: Previous research/findings conducted on this topic/ Description of the subject matter/genre/ Relevant anecdote or biographical information) • Sciences (Investigation of the crime scene: Previous research/findings conducted on this topic/ Explanation of potentially unfamiliar theories and ideas/ Common methodologies applied to this topic) • History (Investigation of suspects and victims: Previous research/findings conducted on this topic/ Historical context/ Brief description of main characters) • Current Events (New information on the case or continuations of the case or related to the case) There are four areas and you will have additional group members. Those should be assigned the introduction and conclusion. 7 Slide Organization: 1. Introduction with Thesis Statement An effective thesis statement expresses your argument in a clear, concise manner. It’s the most important part of your presentation, as it forms the foundation upon that all your research and analysis will rest. Remember: a thesis statement should be no more than one sentence. Your thesis statement should incorporate ● An argument that makes an original contribution to existing scholarship ● A research question that focuses and guides your paper. Example: In order to solve the mystery of human consciousness, we should begin by examining the ways in which social media algorithms mimic the patterns of a developing human brain. Introduction Begin discussing your topic right away and explain why your arguments matter. The introduction is your chance to create a framework for the rest of your paper. Hook The first sentence of your introduction should be engaging enough to keep your readers interested and wanting to learn more. Research topic Hook The novels of Ann Radcliffe Sir Walter Scott famously spoke of Ann Radcliffe as a writer whose “prose was poetry and whose poetry was prose.” Queen of Hawaii On a chilly morning in early 1895, Liliuokalani, last queen of Hawaii, gazed calmly at the men sent to arrest her for treason. Background information Providing context will help familiarize your readers with the subject material, and will ultimately allow them to understand your point of view. 2-5. (Four) Slides on Subject/ Research Area Each paragraph/ slide should focus on a single claim and must always refer back to your thesis. Follow the template below when constructing your body paragraphs: 1. Claim: Introduce the focus of your paragraph 2. Evidence: Introduce the source(s) that will support your claim with internal, parenthetical citations 3. Explanation: Tell your readers why your source(s) support your claim 4. Conclusion: Explain how this paragraph relates to your argument as a whole 6. Conclusion Good conclusions tie the presentation together. Reflect upon the ways in which the different parts of your argument relate to each other, or perhaps demonstrate gaps in existing research or knowledge. Other questions to consider when writing a conclusion include: ● How might your argument change the way others view the topic? ● Why does this topic matter? ● What are the broader implications of this topic? ● How may your audience be affected? 7. Bibliography Make sure you are citing each source you use in order to avoid accidental plagiarism in APA style. Submission: You may use Google Slides, PowerPoint, or Prezi to complete slide presentations. It is important that all group members have access to slide presentations for editing, comment, and review. You may leave off the names of any non-participating members to ensure that work is graded fairly. Submit the final presentation to the assignment in Unit 3, Week 6. Rubric: Theory Theory expresses a statement of fact, value, or policy. 10 points Appeals & Reasoning Examples of ethos, pathos, and logos (inductive, deductive, causal, and analogical) are present in an argument. 20 points Organization Follows 7 paragraph organizational structure with an introduction (hook-thesis), background, body (claim, evidence, and explanation), conclusion, and bibliography. 30 points Grammar Spelling, punctuation, and grammar rules. 10 points Citations Internal (in-text) citations and bibliography in APA style. 10 points
