The General Environment

For this essay, we will draw upon the two major things of controversy in the US this year: the pandemic and police brutality.* Pick one of the two with which to work. Then, write an essay that does the following: Describe the general environment with regard to your chosen issue Narrow your focus to a singular specific issue (problem) within the field Propose an action to take to fix the issue (solve the problem) Here are the specific requirements for the essay Standard MLA format (1″ margins, 12 point Times New Roman font, double-spaced) Works Cited page 5 FULL pages of writing (the Works Cited page DOES NOT COUNT) Use of 2 credible web-based sources Use of 2 credible print sources Use of 1 text selection in this module from World of Ideas Format your writing with Aristotle’s 5 part arrangement Example (with a non-related subject) Say you were tasked with writing a paper that addresses the need to influence student behavior at high schools. After doing some research and finding several interesting possible solutions, you settle with the idea of school uniforms. Here is an approach to deal with that according to the above requirements, with regard to arrangement. Introduction: Craft an intro paragraph that establishes some kind of connection to the reader. Perhaps you would use a personal story from your high school days (if you have any), or you could share a story from someone else. Statement of fact: Write several paragraphs that outline the problem(s) of student behavior in high schools. Identify specific behavioral issues and their possible origins (drug use, destructive clique affiliations, disobedience, disunity, etc.). Narrow your focus on one issue that can be tackled with a concrete solution (class issues may be diminished by the use of uniforms; a sense of commonality (unity) might be fostered by their use) Statement of proof: Propose a solution to the narrowed problem. Keep in mind that you don’t have to propose something that is perfect; it just needs to improve the situation. Thesis: High schools should implement a uniform policy for students. Refutation of Opposition: Anticipate what the opposing side would say; present that side; then, offer your rebuttal. The word “anticipate” should not mean “guess.” You should research things specifically. Your proposal will most likely not be the first time in use (“freedom of expression” is the common touchstone for this argument in the US).  Conclusion: Leave the argument with a strong appeal. Think about this as your knockout blow. You want to leave the reader with the feeling that your action must be taken. If you start with a story, you might want to end with one. A tale of successful implementation (such as with schools in Japan) might serve to send a good parting message.
