The Impact Of Disease

Impacts of Diseases: When disease strikes, it affects not only the patients but also their family, friends, and co-workers. Every person pays are that is part of the daily functioning of a family, society, and society. Therefore, when a person is struck by a disease, the normal functioning of a family or a society becomes disrupted. Family members, friends, and co-workers have to alter their usual lifestyles to take up some responsibilities of the ill person. In essence, the demand for testing, treatment, and recovery impacts an individual’s personal, social, financial, and professional aspects of life.    One of my friends once shared an experience that really impacted my life. Anna, not her real name, was born in a family of three children. They were raised by a single mother who owned a partnership restaurant in the city. Anna’s father had died of diabetes when she was 10 years old, and thus, their mother was the sole breadwinner in the family. Besides, Anna and her siblings were still in school and thus could not seek employment to help their mother in providing for the family. When Anna joined high school, their mother was as diagnosed with cancer, and her health began deteriorating with each passing day. She could no longer work at the restaurant, but her partner, who was her sister, offered to run it and share the profits. Anna’s mother spent the family savings seeking treatment from ne hospital to the other until the account dried up.   The sickness of Anna’s mother impacted the family, and her co-worker significantly (Oben, 2020). First, Anna, being the firstborn, had to assume the role of a breadwinner. She had to work as a part-timer in a supermarket across the street to support the family and her sick mother. On the other hand, Anna’s Aunt struggled to keep the business running, but the work was too much for her; the business collapsed after two years. With reduced income, Anna dropped from school and started working as a full-time worker at the supermarket to raise the school fees for her siblings and medication for her mother. In essence, Anna’s aunt lost the partnership business, and Anna assumed the role of a breadwinner in her family.    On the part of the patient, the life of Anna’s mother was impacted significantly. For one, the sickness deprived her of the chance to care for her family as a caring and loving mother. She cud not go to her usual work, neither could she perform other house chores at home, since her heath was deteriorating each day. Most of her time was spent in and out of hospitals. Secondly, her social life was affected, as well. She could not join her friends in community development projects anymore. Moreover, cancer treatments are significantly high, and she did not have a health insurance cover (Panner, 2020). Thus, she was forced to use all the family savings n chemotherapy treatments. Consequently, her family’s financial status was hardy hit by her treatment demands to the extent that her daughter, Anna, had to drop from school.    However, the story by my friend Anna had a significant influence on my life. I empathized with her and devoted my life to creating awareness and enlighten people on the importance of obtaining a health insurance cover. If Anna’s mother had a health insurance cover, most of the treatment costs could be covered by the insurance, and the family could not have run into financial problems. Although health insurance coverage can be helpful to people of all ages, it is especially vital for older adults, who are more susceptible to illnesses, due to reduced immune system. When disease strikes, it not only affects the patient but oftentimes their family, friends, and co-workers as well. The demand for testing, treatment, and recovery can be a long grueling process and will impact your social, professional, financial, and personal aspects of life, among others.
