Final exam online activity: During your college years and your entry into the workforce, you will occasionally need to secure letters of reference. Graduate schools, internship programs, undergraduate transfer, scholarships, jobs, fellowships, and many other institutions or organizations require letters of recommendation. It is important to request these letters in a way that makes the process easy for the person who you have selected as a recommendation writer. You should write to them once, with all of the relevant information, including deadlines, addresses, phone numbers, name of contact person if there is one, and a copy of the recommendation form if there is one. You should indicate a couple of qualities that you are proud of and that you would like the teacher to make note of, if possible. EXAM TASK: Write a 250-400 word letter to a professor asking if the professor would be willing to write a letter of recommendation for you. In your second paragraph, indicate that if he or she is willing, here is the information necessary. Note: Unless you have a current need for a recommendation, you will be “making up” all of the information, as this is a practice letter, such as the school’s name, deadlines, and so on. You should indicate which class you attended, which quarter or semester, and what sort of writing or other projects you worked on while in your chosen recommenders’ class. If you produced a portfolio of work, such as on a google doc, you can send a link to that google.doc to refresh the faculty member’s memory about your work. (for this you could start a google doc with nothing really in it, and link to it.) Be sure to use paragraphs and/or bulleted lists so that the faculty member can easily find the information he or she needs in your letter/email. Date your letter or email, and make sure you provide a full return address and return email address IN THE BODY OF THE LETTER/EMAIL If you have instructions related to what the recommendation letter should address, that you have received as part of an application packet, be sure and forward that information to your recommender, as an attachment or screenshot. Here is a summary of the parts of the letter you must include. THE TYPE OF RECOMMENDATION YOU WANT –(ie for graduate school, transfer, nursing school, a job, an internship, fellowship, etc.) THE NAME AND ADDRESS OF THE PLACE YOU WOULD LIKE THE PROFESSOR TO SEND THE RECOMMENDATION ( Email address, if that is required. Include the name of the contact person if you have an individual’s name ) THE DEADLINE FOR THE RECOMMENDATION. THE QUALITIES THAT YOU WISH THE PROFESSOR TO NOTE IN HIS OR HER RECOMMENDATION (or the things you want to be emphasized and that you feel will help your application). A REMINDER OF THE COURSE, QUARTER OR SEMESTER YOU STUDIED WITH THE PROFESSOR AND A PROJECT OR PAPER THAT HE OR SHE MIGHT REMEMBER. YOU CAN EVEN QUOTE SOMETHING YOUR TEACHER SAID TO YOU, IN A MARGIN NOTE ON A PAPER, OR IN CLASS, TO HELP HIM OR HER FOCUS ON SOME DISTINCTIVE ATTRIBUTE YOU SHOWED DURING YOUR COURSEWORK.
