UC Berkeley The Urbanization of Two Different Cities Manhattan and Queens Essay

I’m studying for my Sociology class and don’t understand how to answer this. Can you help me study?

Overview: One of the core components of the course is a research paper. This is your opportunity to apply the concepts and ideas that we are discussing in the class to neighborhoods of your choice in comparative perspective. Neighborhoods for this paper refer to a relatively local place – an urban neighborhood, suburban area, rural town or village (in contrast to a major city in general – i.e., Los Angeles, New York, etc.). The main idea of the research paper is to compare and contrast selected neighborhoods in relation to the course materials. For example, how do certain concepts better shed light on your understanding of these neighborhoods? Can you provide empirical evidence that supports your discussion? Can you make any future inferences or predictions about your neighborhoods based on your new knowledge of it? Topic: You may select any neighborhoods (as defined above) and draw from a selection of topics from this course in writing your paper. Depending on what you decide to focus on in relation to your selected neighborhoods, you may focus your paper on different topics for the course. You may choose to focus on the relevance or shortcomings of various theoretical models on cities, issues of residential segregation, access to housing, urban development and renewal, urban politics and social movements, arts and culture, etc. While the focus of the paper is open depending on the preferences of your group in relation to selected neighborhoods, the paper should have a clear thesis statement and coherent structure. The objective of the paper therefore is to compare and contrast selected neighborhoods in relation to some of the main topics and ideas we are discussing in the course. Tip: Narrow your topic down as much as possible – this will help you focus your analysis and scope. You should not try to describe your neighborhoods in general but focus on a narrow selection of criteria from the course to compare and contrast. For example, you could select suburbanization, migration, or art to discuss your neighborhoods. ***Number of neighborhoods: The paper should be comparative study of more than one neighborhood. You may choose 2-3 neighborhoods to write about and compare and contrast in the paper. The paper cannot be based on only 1 neighborhood, as it needs to have a comparative analysis of 2 or 3 neighborhoods maximum.*** Required Sources: You must use 3 readings from the course for the paper. You may pick any 3 readings from the course for your paper. A strong paper will pick concepts, ideas, arguments from the course to compare and contrast your various neighborhoods. You must use 6 outside sources for the paper. Outside materials may come from a variety of sources including newspapers, magazines, academic literature, publications from government and non-government organizations, social media, and other formats. Addressing potential biases, shortcomings, or interests in your sources will only help strengthen your paper and help you defend your choice of course readings that you find most relevant for your paper. The final research paper will be 4-5 pages of text (double-spaced, 12- point standard font, with no greater than 1” margins) uploaded to the course website via Turnitin. Make sure to cite any course readings or outside sources in your paper (any citation format is acceptable as long as it is clear and consistent).
