UW Whitewater The Best Seat in the House and Passion Fish Discussion

I don’t understand this Sociology question and need help to study.

Instructions: Type your answers to the following eight questions, applying your knowledge of the novel The Best Seat in the House and the film Passion Fish (1992; free on YouTube) to material covered in class readings and lectures. Make sure to answer each question fully, with complete sentences, using examples from the book and film to illustrate your points where appropriate. Also include relevant information from assigned readings (cite authors’ last names and page numbers whenever quoting or paraphrasing from a reading).

Formatting: Number your answer to each question and format the paper in size 12, Times New Roman font, double-spaced, with page numbers. The paper should be at least 1,600 words in length.

1- Define what a “rite of passage” is and each of the three stages it entails. Discuss how Allen’s and May-Alice’s transitions to becoming disabled reflect these three stages (explain for each of them). How are Allen and May-Alice similar and different in the way they go through these stages?2- Explain the following three concepts: 1) self-imposed moratorium on social interaction, 2) sequential selection of social settings, and 3) sequential selection of associates. Then, explain how these concepts relate to Allen’s and May-Alice’s experiences of acquiring a disability.3- Define stigma and explain the relationship between stigma and disability generally (i.e. why and how is disability something that is often stigmatized?). Then, use examples from the book and film to illustrate how stigma is present in Allen and May-Alice’s stories, using as many specific terms related to stigma covered in class lecture as possible (make sure to define each term included!). Finally, discuss how the Allen’s and May-Alice’s stories may serve to either reduce and/or perpetuate stigma surrounding disability.4- Explain the concept of the “looking glass self” and how it relates to disability in general. Then, explain how this concept relates to Allen’s and May-Alice’s perceptions of themselves, before and after becoming disabled.5- Explain the concept of the “sick role” and how it relates to disability in general. Then, discuss how the sick role concept was evidenced in Allen’s and May-Alice’s stories.6- Explain the complex embodiment model of disability, and where it stands in relation to the medical and social models. Then, discuss how a complex embodiment approach applies to Allen’s and May-Alice’s experiences of disability.7- What is the difference between “healthy disabled” and “unhealthy disabled,” and why is this distinction important for understanding a person’s experience of disability? Would you identify Allen as healthy disabled or unhealthy disabled? Why? Answer the same questions for May-Alice.8- Offer a critique of the novel and film with regards to their portrayals of disability. What about each portrayal was positive and beneficial? Was there anything problematic about either portrayal? In general, what did you think about each work as a reader/viewer?
