Visual Ananlysis

Step 1. Choose ONE building from the options below. Step 2. Write a visual analysis of the impact of form and function on your chosen building. Your analysis should be a minimum of 500 words, or at least 1 page single-spaced. The purpose of this analysis is to answer the question “Does form follow function?” for your chosen building. This should be reflected in your thesis statement. Please include minimum ONE representative image of your chosen building (i.e. a clear view of the building’s façade) In addition to answering the question of whether form follows function, you may also choose to consider the following questions, which we have discussed in lecture: A. What did the client want/what was/is the building’s purpose? B. Does the building appear today as it did when constructed? C. What does the building say? D. What message does it send/statement does it make? E. What materials are used? F. What role does landscape play? G. What is the overall floorplan like? H.  How does the overall floorplan affect how the interior spaces are used and experienced?   Grading Rubric: Your analysis will be worth 10% of your total grade, or 10 points, and will be graded based on the following qualities: 1 pt. Provides basic information about the building: Minimum 1 representative image of chosen building (i.e. clear view of the building’s façade) name of building the name of architect (if known) date(s) of construction location 1 pt. The analysis appears neat and professional- proofread for spelling and grammar errors, clearly organized. 1 pt. Analysis has a clear thesis statement that answers the question “Does form follow function?” 3 pts. The analysis includes a detailed description of the building and its architectural characteristics, using relevant terminology when possible. 4 pts. The detailed description is used to support the interpretation of the building that is posited in the thesis statement. In other words, the author goes beyond the mere description of characteristics and considers HOW material, setting, style, form, function, etc. affect the building’s overall presentation/meaning.
